SEASON TWENTY-SIX CUSTOMS

Probably my favourite season of classic Who, if not the entire series, and packed with lots of cool and unfigured monsters. Beginning with:

THE DESTROYER

Stunning costume this, and a definite absence from my collection. This was the first custom I made once I'd decided to go full-on with tackling all the monsters of Who.

Base figure is a Tennant Doctor, with heavy resculpting of all the costume details. The huge horns were built up around twisted wire, and the cape was trimmed from an action figure cape. The chain is real metal, glued into the relevant places and the dreadlocks were trimmings from my spares bin.

HUSKS

Apparently I didn't think these were worth taking work in progress images of back in the day... The base figure for both was a Hartnell Doctor - the colour scheme and silhouette saved a bit of work. I added tails to the coat and sculpted new details over the heads and hands. Most of the work was finding decent images of the actual props from all angles - what's seen on screen is very dark and blurry.

ANCIENT HAEMOVORE

Another fantastic looking costume, and definitely figure-worthy. The base figure was a Davison Doctor, with head and skin details sculpted from scratch. Given the complex nature of the head and neck details, there's no head rotation. The skirt sections are trimmed from pieces of rubber.

Given the colour scheme of the original, this allowed for lots of fun paint effects - dry brushing, speckling, etc, which helped bring out all the detail.

HAEMOVORE

Given I'd done the leader, I definitely needed a common or garden troop Haemovore as well! See above for WIP image. I can't honestly recall the base figure I used, but given how much sculpt there is going on, I don't know if it really matters!

Again, most of the body details are sculpted, with the skirt trimmed from rubber pieces. The head is a cast obtained from another customiser back in the day, although I subsequently went in and touched up some of the suckers around the mouth.

I think I could still do with another Haemovore - possibly the more mutated version in the puffy jacket? Maybe when I finish my lap of honour...

CHEETAH PERSON

And finally, in the last televised story from classic Who...

Base figure was a Leela - the slight build, bare arms and legs and boots made it an obvious choice, and the skirt was already pretty much what was needed. Good match of fodder and design! Head details and furry texture all sculpted in, and extra costume details glued on from my spares bin.

Again, a costume that rewards lots of attention to paint - dry brushing and the addition of a million spots helped sell the final version.
